The town of Clare is the de-facto "capital" of the Clare Valley wine growing region. It was named after either the County or town of Clare in Ireland and was laid out in 1842 by the first Mayor, Paddy Gleeson. The picturesque character of the Valley, the charm of the town, its history and its winemaking enterprises make it a magnet for tourists.
